Half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas live in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The country also harbours the greatest concentration of primates anywhere in Africa, a thundering 43-metre waterfall on the Nile, tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and some of the continent's most spectacular birding. Welcome to Uganda — the Pearl of Africa. Your Clan Adventure guide meets you at Entebbe International Airport and transfers you to your Kampala or Entebbe hotel. Enjoy a welcome dinner with a briefing on your upcoming gorilla trekking adventure. If time allows, take an optional evening drive along Lake Victoria's shore.
After an early breakfast, depart southwest on one of Uganda's most scenic drives — through equatorial tea plantations, crater lakes, and the rolling hills of southwestern Uganda. The journey takes approximately 8 hours with stops for lunch and stunning viewpoints along the way. Arrive at your lodge on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest as the mist settles over the ancient treetops. A short evening nature walk prepares you for tomorrow.
The day that defines the entire journey. After an early breakfast, report to the Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing point where you are assigned to a habituated gorilla family. Expert trackers and armed rangers guide you into Bwindi — one of the world's oldest and most bio-diverse forests. The trek to reach the gorillas can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours through dense forest and steep terrain, but every step is worth it. Once found, you spend one extraordinary hour sitting in the presence of mountain gorillas — watching silverbacks, playing juveniles, and nursing mothers go about their remarkable lives. An experience that cannot be adequately described in words.
A well-deserved rest day after the intensity of gorilla trekking. Drive a short distance to Lake Bunyonyi — Uganda's most beautiful lake, dotted with 29 islands and surrounded by steeply terraced hillsides. Enjoy a relaxed canoe trip between the islands, a visit to a local Batwa community (the original forest people of Bwindi), and a peaceful afternoon watching the lake shimmer in the afternoon light. Optional bird walk for the keen birder.
An early departure for the return drive to Entebbe — or fly by light aircraft if you prefer a faster, scenic option. Uganda connects beautifully with Rwanda for a combined gorilla experience, or with Tanzania for a Serengeti safari extension. Arrive at Entebbe airport in the evening for your international departure, or overnight at an Entebbe lakeside hotel before flying out the next morning.
When to Go
Uganda's equatorial climate means gorilla trekking is available year-round. However, the dry seasons offer more comfortable trekking conditions in Bwindi's steep terrain.
